Title: A Mocap Thread, I Guess!
Post by: GRIDHOG on Jun 15, 2026, 07:22 PM
I got a 360 kinect for cheap with a PC adapter and it's been a ton of fun

The program MikuMikuDance has inbuilt kinect compatibility but turns out setting up just about anything with a kinect is a total pain with 50 different dependencies every time. incredibly fortunate someone made a spinoff program (mikumikucapture) thats been so far the only thing i've gotten working

Anyone else mess around with motion capture? I know nowadays you can do a lot with just normal cameras and ARkit, especially since vtubing is so big. for some reason i always had trouble with other options though, be it paywalls, technical limitations, or skill issues.

dude that is an awesome gif lol. and this is super cool!! never touched mocap and I feel like i never want to with how expensive and technical it always is when I hear about it (cue codeMiko's setup tour) but I did almost get into rigging vtuber models. seems really cool and ill do that eventually if i find the time and patience again

Thanks! part of me really wants to dig into those more high-technical-effort(or patience)-zero-cost options and the other part of me is like "i got 1 program working. im happy. im content" lmaoo

I know someone who does vtuber rigging stuff and its really crazy what people are able to achieve. i tried it myself but i don't even really use blender (lags real bad for me) so trying to work with the technical standard gets a bit awkward. (especially since i was doing a low poly texture based face, which i KNOW is possible to make responsive to tracking. somehow.......)

I like the kinect because since its so old it's pretty well compatible with my computer as opposed to like high end Ai Webcam stuff, on the other its kinda funny how i've run into incompatibilities with dependencies because i accidentally downloaded the 32 bit version of something thats incompatible with a 64 bit version of a thing and vice versa. i imagine you don't really have to worry about that kind of thing with more modern setups  :P

best of luck next time you give it a shot!

This is peak, you could do a lot of funny bits with your Miku mocap xD And yeah, most other options for mocap that are free are often either complicated or require a PC that can handle more stuff :")
I've been digging for a while for something for Vtubing and it is pretty frustrating looking for something that meets your needs specially if you have a very specific goal in mind, almost makes you want to create your own tool but as soon as I looked up how to do it I already gave up looking at the documentation ;_;

i did do some rigging in after effects in some classes and made a very simplistic character controller for my grad animation which was lots of fun but its a lot of work to get it right.
and either way ur learning a lot of this technical computery stuff I think is weirdly getting lost with the simplicity that is encroaching on modern operating systems to the point teenagers dont know how file systems work anymore... freaky

dude yeah thats what i noticed as well. like live2d looks like so much fun but the payment plan and learning curve are just not something i want to dive into right now yk.

Thanks!! I definitely have ideas, especially since i can probably export motions and clean them up in MMD. you're supposed to be able to anyway but the one time i tried it didn't work, i'll figure somethin out.

MikuMikuCapture doesn't have kinect hand tracking (although it lets you connect a wiimote for better wrist tracking, don't have one but that's really cool as an option) so if i ever do venture into doing more stuff its gonna be weighed against how much i want hand tracking. and i'm pretty expressive with my hands so it could very well be enough for me to power through and figure something out  :P

when it comes to vtubing especially it can be a real pain, especially if you don't wanna deal with unity  :'(

another project i've been doing: taking a rigged model rip of cruelty squad's foxtrot and making it mmd (and thus also mmc mocap) compatible. mmd is picky with bones so he's kinda janky, but overall still works with the program
